Tribal Cat Envelopes by Judi Kauffman for The Queen’s Ink

In my previous post for The Queen’s Inkling, I experimented with Laurel Burch’s Tribal Cats and Dog Park die sets – but none of the matching stamps. This time, I’ve been puttering around with the three cat faces from the Tribal Cats stamp set – but without any of the dies.
I thought it would be fun to experiment on envelopes, a favorite way to figure out color combinations and explore ideas before I get ‘serious’ and make cards, ATCs, or work in an art journal. I chose Kraft brown because the rich surface is perfect for doodling with opaque white and gold pens, great with colored pencils and markers, too.
The stamp set includes templates for masking and stenciling the heads, bodies and tail and I’ll get into those in an upcoming tutorial. There are also texture stamps for decorating the bodies and tail that I haven’t yet taken out of the package. I just wanted to deal with the faces first.

This is a portable project, perfect for time spent in a doctor’s waiting room or at the airport. All supplies, including the stamped envelopes, fit in a gallon-size plastic bag or small tote.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Stamp the cat faces on a bunch of A2 Kraft brown envelopes, arranging them as shown or as you prefer. Be sure to leave space for the postage stamp. (I chose dark blue ink, but any dark color will work.)

2. Using the same ink or a matching color pen or pencil, stamp or draw lines for writing a name and address. Add a stamped greeting, positioned vertically so it won’t get confused with the name and address (see below).

3. Color, doodle…Add dots, hearts; extend the whiskers; surround the faces with opaque gold. Play, and then play some more. (I forced myself to stop at nine envelopes but could have made dozens.)

YOUR TURN:

Use the supplies I’ve listed or whatever you prefer. I chose brown envelopes in keeping with the tribal feel of the stamps, but white or other colors will work just fine.

Instead of using water-based dye inks that blend into the colors of the pens and markers, use waterproof inks. (I like the blending!)

Instead of just faces, include the bodies and tails when you stamp and color the cats. (Suggested layouts: One cat per envelope, or two facing each other with space between them for name and address.)

I [HEART] Dogs and Cats by Judi Kauffman for The Queen’s Ink

I taught. I shopped! It’s the perfect combo. I can’t just teach a class at The Queen’s Ink and leave without looking around, and I can’t look around without filling a basket. Last Saturday I went home with Laurel Burch’s Tribal Cats stamp set and matching dies, plus the set of dies to match the Laurel Burch Dog Park stamp set (five dogs) that I’d purchased on my last trip.

I haven’t yet had time to stamp the new Tribal Cats or more of the dogs, but I did manage to play with my new dies! I thought it would be fun to see what I could come up with using only the simple silhouette shapes. One thing led to another and before I knew it there were three Valentines on my table!

Instructions:

1. Put the ‘leftovers’ from a sheet of Transparent Glitter Dots peel-offs onto a piece of tan cardstock. Because the sheet is transparent, the color of the cardstock is visible through the sparkle and it creates a tone-on-tone effect. Die cut a cat head, body and tail for each cat card; die cut one or more dogs for each dog card. (Leftovers from one sheet of Glitter Dots yielded three dogs and one three-piece cat.)
2. Using a sponge dauber, add dye inks to selected areas of the die cut shapes to shade them and to add stripes or spots to the animals. Please refer to the photos for some ideas on where to place the sponged-on inks and vary in whatever way pleases your eye.

3. Use 5mm or 7mm cat’s eye or lure eye stickers, gems, sequins, or small die cut or punched circles for the eyes.

4. Die cut or punch some red hearts in assorted sizes.

5. Add a 1.25” or 1.5” strip of green cardstock to a blue card base (side- or top-fold) for the ‘grass’ where the animals will sit or stand. Arrange the hearts, cat, dogs. When pleased with the arrangement, adhere the hearts, then the cat or dog(s) or two cats, two dogs, one of each, or whatever mix you want, using glue or double-sided tape for the hearts and foam tape under the animals for dimension. Tip: Angle the cat’s head toward its tail and add a heart on its chest.

Va-Voom by Nancy Sheads for The Queen's Ink

Welcome back to The Queen's Inkling!

Sometimes you see an image that you just know that you have to color. That's how I felt about Va Voom by Penny Black. Every time I stopped by The Queen's Ink, I'd picked up the stamp and then put it back down. Picked it up. Put it back. For weeks. Finally, I decided that it was a sign - I needed to color this stamp. So the next time I picked it up, it went home with me.

This image has such an exuberance that it needed bright colors. Frankly, I loved the way it was colored on the stamp packaging so I just decided to go with the flow. Sometimes it's nice to just color without worrying about color schemes (although I did modify - albeit slightly - the colors of the flag). For the sentiment, I added one of the new Letter It clear stamp sets by Ranger.

So, is there an image that you absolutely have to color (but haven't yet)? Apparently there's now vacancy at the top of my list!

Klimt-ify It: Class Recap by Judi Kauffman for The Queen’s Ink

Saturday, January 20, 2018, 11 AM – Fifteen artists (AKA students) arrived at the Queen’s Ink for the first-ever Klimt-ify It class! I’d been planning the workshop for a very long time and was so excited to see what would happen when it went from idea to reality. It was all I’d hoped for, and more!

The premise of the class is that everyone can channel their inner Gustaf Klimt, adding oodles of details and lots of gold to cards, ATCs, journal pages, and other projects. I began with a look at several Klimt paintings and discussed some basic things to use as inspiration.

Then, I front-loaded the lesson with oodles of info about the techniques and materials, allowing everyone to work at her own pace for the duration of the class and allowing me to roam around and answer questions that came up.

At one point, someone said, “I’ve never been in a room with fifteen women so quiet all at the same time!” She was right…You could have heard a pin drop. Everyone was absorbed in her project and chatting was sporadic. And even though we’d factored-in time for a snack break, nobody stopped working till the end of the session when Patti did the judging and we awarded the prize for the best socks (I believe that comfortable feet add to creativity!), followed by a random prize drawing and a look at the ‘Gallery’ where everyone put something on display.

The class filled and there wasn’t space for anyone who was on a waiting list. It went so well that we’re planning to repeat it some time in the late spring or early summer.

A shout-out to Sakura of America for providing Gelly Roll, Glaze, Pigma Micron, Graphic, and Pen-touch pens for the demo and for students to share, and to Clearsnap for the Magic Stamp blocks I prepared and shared. And a huge thank you to Patti and Terri for setting up the class, making a supply kit for each student, for inking the rainbow pads we used (so pivotal to the project), and most of all for making The Queen’s Ink such a friendly, comfortable and special place.

Here’s a look at the class at work, followed by the students’ finished or almost-finished projects:
